Intervention in the Gallery Space
Series of Photos
2016

In 2016 I was invited by curator Claudia Baroncini to exhibit new work in the space of the Musei Civici in Imola, my hometown, in the northern Italy. After a series of conversations with the curator and the museum staff, I initiated a process that ended up with the establishment of a new residency programme inside the Museum itself. We named the project Residenza Museo. I myself used the space of the museum to work for 3 weeks in 2016, and in the following years, the museum has organised new editions of the programme hosting local and international artists.

In this series of photos I documented my stay and work at the residency itself. The aim is to underline the importance that both process and the site-specific aspect have in the work of art, with both these elements emerging in the final piece.

2016

During Residenzamuseo 01, a self-initiated residency programme at Museo San Domenico, in Imola, I used the rooms of the museum for studying and work. I soon discovered that the rooms now dedicated to contemporary art were, during the 16th century, the library space of the Dominican friars living in this former monastery. Drawing a link with this former role of the space, I started collecting books on the topic of libraries, to be exhibited in the room and available to the exhibition viewers for reading.

In Imola, a town in northern Italy, ceramics is the primary craft. The traditional products from the local factory vary from tiles to the usual kitchen tools: plates, cups, bowls and jags. The “Giallo Fiore” (Flower Yellow), a pattern from the 20th century, is the most popular decorative motif and has become an icon in the local tradition. In recent years, due to the economic crisis, most employees at the factory have been made redundant. During Residenzamuseo 01, a self-initiated residency programme in Imola, I made contact with one of the ceramic artists employed at the factory. Eventually, we started a conversation that brought us to collaborate on this project, where the old technique, risking extinction, was slowly applied to the disposable packaging of famous fast food company.

Workshop
2016

A series of posters for the public space as the outcome of a workshop.

In spring 2016, in the context of a self-initiated residency programme at Museo San Domenico in my Imola, my hometown in Italy, I invited a group of design students from the University of Ferrara to a one day workshop with the goal of designing a series of posters. These poster were to be displayed around the city in an attempt to move beyond the museum walls as the sole site of exhibition. After a guided tour of the museum, the students were asked to chose an item in the collection as a starting point for their design. The outcomes were then exhibited at the museum and around town.
